A Note from the Engineers

At Apparent Energy, we have addressed the 3 major causes for premature lead acid battery failure.

  1. Corrosion: Overcharging a lead acid battery causes corrosion in the lead plates and subsequent premature disintegration of these plates. Overcharging is almost exclusively caused by charging cells in series.  Inevitably, during the charging cycle, cells in series, which do not have individual voltage control, experience an uneven and random state of charge as a result of manufacturing differences among the cells.  When one cell goes high, the remaining cells must drop in voltage to accommodate the overall charging voltage.  Corrosion will occur at high battery voltage along with water loss and heat buildup.  The rest of the cells experience low states of charge which contribute to premature failure in those cells as a result of lead sulfate crystal formation on the lead plates.
  1. Sulfation: Sulfation happens predominantly in the discharge cycle, but proper charging can slow the growth this crystal.  Unfortunately, in a series string as mentioned above, cells will inevitably become unevenly charged and cells not getting up in charge will retain the lead sulfate crystal eventually choking the cell and further contributing to the corrosion from overcharge on adjacent cells.
  1. Stratification: Stratification is the settling out of density layers within a battery.  With inconsistent concentration of electrolyte, batteries cannot maintain their rated storage.  The common practice of “equalization” drives the battery voltage up in attempts to mix the electrolyte through cold boiling bubbles rushing to the surface.  This process overcharges the battery causing corrosion.  It also causes water loss in the cell, as well as the development of hydrogen and oxygen gas dangers.

 

To solve these problem Apparent Energy has created the DEC or dielectric energy converter. When placed on a battery the DEC can take energy from the battery and put it back in at a specific frequency and magnitude creating agitation in the cell and mitigation of the lead sulfate crystal growth.  Our tests have shown up to 25% increases in battery life.

As a charging control device, the DEC has allowed us to pulse charge the batteries in an individual fashion eliminating series strings and exclusively caring for each battery cell.  Each cellreceives its own charger, and maintainer. The patented pulsed output of the DEC allows for battery charging which does not cause excessive gassing of the battery.  Because we are constantly desulfating the battery here is no need for an “equalization charge.”  As a result, less water is given off and corrosion from overcharge is done away with.

A DEC placed on each cell will not only add valuable lifetime extension….it will give real time feedback of each cell’s performance via Bluetooth communication.

The operation of the DEC in desulfating mode requires a specific frequency and magnitude of pulsing action.

For the best results, tests would be conducted with the particular size and design of the battery in question to maximize performance.  We call it tuning.
